America! Let’s do that thing we do every four years where we all shriek about how the president has failed us again on something over which he has virtually no control – gas prices!
To be fair, this old distraction doesn’t only get trotted out in presidential election years; we also like to raise it from the dead in cases of national panic, natural disasters…and even man-made environmental disasters.
Sometimes a million fact-filled articles can’t have the effect that one five-minute piece of beautifully executed satire can. On Tuesday, The Daily Show exposed the Morning Zoo Crew of Fox News’ Fox & Friends exposing how the channel is blatantly and despicably sutured to the Republican party, spouting its tired talking points about gas prices as instructed:
You may be saying, sure, Lib, this shows their ties to the Republican party, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that their claims about high gas prices are unfounded…does it? No, I will let The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur do that:
Or, for you readin’ types, check out the extensive amount of information that Media Matters has put together on this…media matter. The bottom line is this: the president has no power over gas prices – unless he wants to increase them via taxation. That’s it. And drilling in the U.S. is not going to produce any measurable amount of improvement either – I’m not saying that it is a bad idea to do it, but this lie that it will drive down the price of gas has got to stop.
